What does a Lab Technician do?

As a Lab Technician in pharma you provide wide-ranging support to the lab and its staff such as equipment maintenance and calibration, preparing samples and reagents, and carrying out experiments and tests to support complex scientific investigations. You give essential support for essential work. You meticulously record results, perform analysis and discuss the data with your colleagues, and make sure that documentation is properly managed. You give general support to the scientists as required, and may even be the person to keep the lab tidy! Depending on the size of the organisation, you may also need to discuss issues with other, relevant departments.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Lab Technician?

Your roles and responsibilities will depend on the size of the organisation and the laboratory facility, as well as the areas in which the lab operates. In all cases, you work closely with the lab scientists and your work will typically involve some or all of the following:

  • conducting experiments and running standard assays and analyses, such as routine high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or gas chromatography (GC);
  • fully documenting all experiments, and testing according to good manufacturing practice (GMP);
  • developing of new assays and analyses with other members of the team;
  • assisting the scientist(s) with targets and plans.

What education and skills do you need as a Lab Technician?

Educational requirements start with bachelor degree (BSc) or master’s (MSc) in a relevant Life Sciences field, such as biotechnology, microbiology or analytical/biochemistry. A background with MLO education is also possible. The preferred subject area will depend on the nature of the work to be performed. As well as this, some lab experience is an advantage – perhaps obtained during a placement year from university or a summer job – and knowledge of the techniques according to the position being offered, in particular the necessary technical skills to operate the equipment.

Personal attributes include:

  • fluency in Dutch and English, spoken and written;
  • accurate work, with excellent attention to detail;
  • strong analytical skills, and patience;
  • excellent communication and able to work as part of a team;
  • good time management.

What salary can you expect as a Lab Technician?

Depending on your qualifications and experience, and the size of the organisation, the salary of a Lab Technician in the Netherlands ranges from €26,000 to €45,000 per annum for full-time positions excluding shift the allowance.
